Books for Jails
Support literacy and lifelong learning at LA County Jails by donating lightly used books and materials at your local LA County Library location. In partnership with Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, we are making it possible for customers to donate their favorite reading material to support inmates’ literacy and educational goals, in addition to their overall mental health and emotional wellness.
What kinds of books to donate
- Fantasy novels
- Adventure novels
- Mystery novels
- Sci-Fi and Fantasy novels
- Spiritual books
- Poetry
- Self-help books
- Books in Spanish
Donation guidelines
- NO hardcovers – ONLY paperback books
- NO textbooks
- NO pornography
- NO depictions or descriptions on how to commit crimes
- NO depictions or descriptions on illegal gambling or unlawful lottery
- MUST be in good condition / shape
How to donate
- Bring your lightly used materials to your local LA County Library location.
- Inform library staff that you are donating books for the Books for Jails program.
- For donations larger than 3 – 5 boxes or to organize a book drive for this program, contact your local LA County Library location at least 2 weeks in advance to make arrangements.
