Get ready to learn music theory, sight-reading, and essential playing techniques in a fun and supportive environment.

Music Stars offers small, in-person group lessons specifically designed for children ages 11-13 who are eager to learn. Each 45-minute weekly session will focus on one of three exciting instruments: acoustic guitar, electronic drum kit, or electronic keyboard with hands-on learning from professional music instructors. We all know practice makes perfect, which is why as a Music Stars student, you’ll have ability to check out instruments to hone your skills between lessons.
This exclusive program runs for six weeks. Days and time vary depending on locations, as displayed below. Please fill out the interest form below to receive a notification when enrollment begins on May 13, 2026.

Important Information
Age Range: Music Stars group lessons are open to children ages 11-13. If you’re outside this age range, keep scrolling to discover valuable digital resources that can help you on your musical learning journey!
Registration Confirmation: Once a student registers, someone from LA County Library will reach out to confirm their inclusion in the class.
Commitment: By registering for the six-week course, students are making a commitment to both the instrument instruction and the rules for borrowing the instrument.
Parent/Guardian Presence: A parent or guardian is required to remain at the library throughout the entire 45-minute class duration.
Instrument Enrollment: Students may enroll in lessons for only one musical instrument. However, students may be placed on a waitlist for other group lesson(s).

Frequently Asked Questions
Is any prior musical experience required to participate?
No musical experience is required to participate.
How long are the group lessons?
Each group lesson will be 45 minutes long.
Please plan to arrive at the library no less than 5 minutes early to ensure lessons start on time and all students can benefit from the full 45minute session.
How long is the program?
Each Music Stars course is 6 weeks in length. Participants will be required to attend each 45-minute lesson. Please refer to the Class & Location information above for specific dates and times.
How can I register my student?
Students will be enrolled on a first come, first served basis through our online Enrollment Form.
How will I know if my student has been accepted into Music Stars?
Upon review of the completed Registration Form, an email will be sent with instructions to complete enrollment at the participating library or program updates. Please be sure to add MusicStars@library.lacounty.gov to your Safe Senders List to receive timely updates.
Parents, guardians, and/or caregivers are required to sign and submit a Program Agreement Form before services begin. This may be done in advance via email or on the first day of lesson.
Please note: Registration forms received after the first lesson will automatically be added to the waitlist. Customers will be contacted if and when a space is available.
Will there be one-on-one instruction?
The format of the classes will be done in a group setting, and Teaching Artists will provide a student assessments at the end of the program.
Can I register my student for more than one instrument?
Students enrolled in an instrument can be placed on the waitlist, so it may be possible to attend more than one session as space permits.
How many lessons does my child need to attend?
Attendance at each lesson is required.
Space is very limited, so we ask parents and caregivers to carefully consider other schedule obligations before enrolling in the program
Do parents need to be present during all lessons?
Library staff and Teaching Artists are not responsible for the supervision of students.

What happens if my student misses a lesson?
Due to the short nature of the program, students will be required to attend all lessons to maximize the benefits of this free service. Students who miss any lessons may be removed from services and another student on waitlist in their spot. We ask parents and caregivers to carefully consider other schedule obligations before enrolling in the program.
Can my student with special needs or learning disabilities enroll?
Music Stars welcomes students of all abilities. Our program is designed to provide sustained music lessons in a fun, engaged, and supportive learning environment through regular instruction and learning activities.
Music Stars is not an intervention program nor can teaching artists provide recommendations or diagnose any concerns you may have with your student’s musical progress. Additional information about Special Education Services at different school districts can be found on the Los Angeles County Office of Education’s website.
Who will be teaching the music lessons?
LA County has partnered with Bloom Arts Foundation to lead the music lessons. All Teaching Artists have at least 5 years of professional music experience and at least 2 years of teaching music to elementary to high school students.
What skills will the lessons cover?
Music Stars is designed for beginner level introduction to music theory, sight reading, and basic playing techniques. Lessons may include the geography of the musical instrument, rhythmic notation, ear playing, and ensemble playing.
Do I need to bring my own instrument for the lessons?
We will provide an instrument for the lessons at enrollment and students may borrow that instrument for the 6 week duration of the course.
If I own my own instrument, can I use it for the lessons?
To ensure consistency, students are required to use the instruments provided by the library for the lessons.
Can I borrow an instrument without signing up for the lessons?
All instruments are available to borrow as part of the Tool Lending Library program
Can my student continue to borrow instruments after the last session?
Musical instruments can be checked out for an additional three weeks after the last session. We encourage students to continue learning from the variety of materials and resources available from the library like books, DVDs, and digital resources also available on this page.
