Happy Lunar New Year!
2026 – Year of the Horse
What is Lunar New Year?
The Lunar New Year is the beginning of a calendar year where the months are based on the cycles of our moon. It is based on the lunar calendar, which is different from the Gregorian calendar used in the United States and many other parts of the world. Those who observe Lunar New Year celebrate for multiple days — not just one day (New Year’s Day) as in the Gregorian calendar. The Lunar New Year is also a major celebration that is observed by numerous cultures, mostly in East and Southeast Asia, including China, Vietnam, South Korea, and Malaysia. It is often referred to as “Chinese New Year” because the celebration is considered to have originated there. Lunar New Year provides an opportunity for families to reunite and celebrate traditions.
When Does Lunar New Year Begin?
In 2026, Lunar New Year begins on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. LA County Library is celebrating with in-person and virtual events along with a booklist with titles for all ages to enjoy. Please see below for more information and registration details.
Does This Mean That It Won’t Be the Year of The Snake Anymore?
Yes! It’s time to turn the page to a new animal from the Chinese Zodiac for 2026: the horse. The Chinese Zodiac is a cycle of 12 years, where each year is represented by one of 12 animals. This year, 2026, is the year of the fire horse, and what a better time to come into your local LA County Library. The horse is the seventh animal in the 12-year Chinese zodiac cycle and is associated with the fire element. The fire horse signifies passion and ambition and will bring forth breakthroughs and dynamic changes.
What is LA County Library Doing to Celebrate Lunar New Year?
We’ve got events throughout January and early February to commemorate Lunar New Year, and you’re invited!
Participate!
Celebrate Lunar New Year by picking up a red envelope at your local library between January 29 and February 12. In many cultures that observe Lunar New Year, red envelopes are given as a symbol of good luck, prosperity, and well wishes for the year ahead. Library envelopes are empty by design and are meant to be filled by you with a small gift, note, or token before being shared with loved ones. Take one home, personalize it, and pass along your wishes for a joyful and prosperous Lunar New Year!
