Indigenous Peoples’ Day
Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated annually on the second Monday of October to honor the history, culture, and resilience of Indigenous peoples and to recognize their profound contributions to society.
A Local History: Los Angeles and California
The Los Angeles Basin and the surrounding areas are the ancestral homelands of the Tongva, Tataviam, Serrano, Kizh, and Chumash Peoples, who have cared for these lands since time immemorial.
In August 2017, the Los Angeles City Council voted to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day, a landmark decision championed by local Native activists and community leaders. Shortly after, in 2019, Los Angeles County officially established Indigenous Peoples Day, aligning the county calendar to honor and uplift Native Americans and Indigenous communities across the region.
Across California, recognition of Indigenous Peoples Day reflects an ongoing commitment to acknowledging California Native history, addressing historical injustices, and celebrating contemporary Native arts, languages, and sovereignty.

- American Indian Resource Center: Though temporarily closed for renovations, LA County Library’s American Indian Resource Center (AIRC) was established to provide information for and about American Indians in Los Angeles County. The AIRC collection is the largest public library collection of its kind in the U.S. We look forward welcoming you to this cultural space upon its reopening.
