Come to the library for a night of fellowship and book discussion with the Hawthorne Book Club! The club meets every fourth Wednesday of the month from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

This month’s title is Truevine: Two Brothers, a Kidnapping, and a Mother’s Quest: A True Story of the Jim Crow South by Beth Macy:

In 1899, George and Willie Muse were two little boys, the sons of an African-American sharecropper family in Virginia. Then they were kidnapped and spent the next 28 years in a circus, performing at Buckingham Palace and in sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden. They were global superstars of the pre-radio age. But their fame and appeal was rooted in stereotypes and racial sensationalism, and their mother never stopped trying to reclaim them. At the root of this disturbing tale is the troubling question: were the boys better off as caricatured circus freaks, or growing up black in the Jim Crow South?
