The 2018 graduating class of LA County Library’s Career Online High School program received diplomas in a ceremony held in June. The graduation ceremony, the second held by the Library, was officiated by Library Director Skye Patrick.

Career Online High School is a self-paced, accredited online high school diploma for adults 19 and over, offered for free by LA County Library to cardholders within its service area. In addition to a high school diploma, graduates receive a career certificate, including options like child care and education, food and hospitality, transportation services, and more.

Since the Library launched the program in 2016, 59 adult learners have graduated, preparing themselves for entry into post-secondary education or a new career.

Graduates donned caps and gowns, and received their certificates in front of an audience of family and community members. Graduates represented the communities of Acton, Diamond Bar, Gardena, Lancaster, Lynwood, and various regions of Los Angeles.

“Having earned their high school diplomas, these graduates are now better prepared to find a job, advance in their career, or continue their education,” said Library Director Skye Patrick. “This wonderful program is a great example of how the Library changes lives in a very big way.”

The application process for Career Online High School includes an online self-assessment, pre-requisite course, and in-person interview at a local library. Once enrolled, each student is paired with an academic coach, who offers ongoing guidance, evaluates performance, and connects the student with the resources needed to master the courses.
