At the same time, competitive pressures have often nudged respectable firms to embrace deception. As a result, fraud has been a steady, central feature of American business since the beginning. In a sweeping historical narrative, a professor of history and public policy at Duke University describes the history of frauds in America, from P.T. Barnum to Charles Ponzi and Bernie Madoff.

Creative Change: Why We Resist It… How We Can Embrace It book jacket

Creative Change: Why We Resist It… How We Can Embrace It by Jennifer Mueller, Ph.D.

All business leaders say they want creativity and need real innovation in order to thrive in a competitive world. But according to startling research from management professor Jennifer Mueller, the truth is that business leaders chronically reject creative solutions and embrace the familiar, even as they profess commitment to innovation. Mueller’s research reveals that it’s not just CEOs but educators, parents, and other social trendsetters who struggle to accept new and creative ideas even when desired. Mueller parses the tough questions that these findings raise. Could people have an inherent prejudice against creative ideas? Could the mindset we use to evaluate ideas turn this prejudice on or off? Mueller describes how to shift your mindset to better recognize creative opportunity, and provides counterintuitive recommendations to help people embrace the creative ideas they want.

The Book of Hygge: The Danish Art of Contentment, Comfort, and Connection book jacket

The Book of Hygge: The Danish Art of Contentment, Comfort, and Connection by Louisa Thomsen Brits

The secret to why the Danes are known as “the happiest people on Earth”? Hygge. Hygge (hue-gah) is a Danish word but a universal feeling of being warm, safe, comforted, and sheltered—an experience of belonging to the moment and to each other. Hygge anchors us, reminding us to slow down, to connect with place and with one another, to dwell and savor rather than rush and spend. When you curl up by the fire with a blanket, or have a simple meal with friends, that is hygge. When you acknowledge the sacred in the secular, or focus on people rather than things, or when you express love through small gestures, that is hygge. This full-color lifestyle guide to the centuries-old Danish art of togetherness and contentment shares advice for incorporating hygge practices into everyday life.
